野沢温泉の看板ネコと雪がないゲレンデの魅力
Nozawa Onsen is famous among foreign tourists who enjoy skiing during the snowy season by staying there in winter, but let us introduce you to the joys of Nozawa Onsen outside of winter.
野沢温泉といえば、雪の時期に冬季滞在してスキーを楽しむ外国人旅行者では有名な場所ですが，冬以外の野沢温泉の楽しさをご紹介します。
It is a quiet and homey Japanese-style ryokan with a Showa-era atmosphere, where you can enjoy 100% hot spring water, friendly proprietresses, and Showa-era retro charm, but the most attractive feature of this ryokan are the signboard cats.
まずは看板猫がいる旅館「桐屋旅館」。
昭和の面影がある静かでアットホームな和風旅館で、源泉100％の温泉やフレンドリーな女将さん、昭和レトロな魅力も楽しめる旅館ですが、ここの1番の魅力は看板猫たちです。
A “signboard cat” refers to a cat in front of a store or store. As a symbolic presence of the store, the cat’s presence in the place often makes customers feel familiarity and warmth, but it can also mean a symbol or landmark for the store.
Therefore, a signboard cat is like the “face” of the store.
「看板猫（かんばんねこ）」とは、店やお店の前にいる猫のことを指し、店のシンボル的な存在として、猫がその場所にいることでお客様に親しみや温かさを感じてもらうことが多いですが、その店を象徴するもの、目印という意味もあります。
だから、看板猫はその店の「顔」のような存在です。
There are many such signature cats in Kiriya Ryokan, and many guests stay at the inn for the cats’ sake.
We were one of them.
そんな看板猫が桐谷旅館内にはたくさんいて、猫目的に宿泊するお客さんもたくさんいます。
私たちもその内の1人でした。
There are several cats, some of which are friendly and some of which are shy and do not come out.
The proprietress is well aware of the cats’ personalities and does not force cats that do not like to be served to show themselves.
Cats that like to serve guests are entertained in the front lounge by playing catnip with customers, getting treats, and having their pictures taken.
猫は数匹いて、人懐っこい猫から人見知りで出てこない猫もいます。
女将は猫の個性をよく把握していて、接客が苦手な猫は無理に表に出すことはありません。
接客好きな猫は、フロントのラウンジでお客さんと猫じゃらしなどで遊んだり、おやつをもらったり、写真を撮られたりしてお客さんを楽しませています。
When we stayed there, they even came inside our room.
Even when the door was closed, they could see that there were people inside, or they would “meow meow meow meow” at the door.
When we opened the door, they did not hesitate to come in and start checking our stuff, or sitting on the window sill looking out.
私たちが宿泊した時は、部屋の中まで入ってきてくれました。
扉を閉めていても中に人がいるのがわかるのか、扉の前で「ニャーニャー」と声をかけてきました。
私たちが扉を開けると遠慮なく入ってきて、私たちの荷物チェックを始めたり、窓枠に座って外を眺めたりしていました。
The inn is a traditional Japanese-style ryokan, with a variety of artwork in the public areas and a very clean atmosphere.
The hotel also provides information in English to accommodate the many foreign visitors.
肝心の旅館内は、昔ながらの和風旅館で、パブリックエリアには色々なアートなども飾っていて、とても清潔感のある旅館です。
館内案内なども、外国からの旅行客が多いため、英語での表記もしてあります。
Near the ryokan is a footbath and a small store, as well as Nozawa Onsen’s famous “Ogama,” where steam clouds are rising and it is a good place to take a walk.
Ogama is one of Nozawa Onsen’s most famous landmarks, with hot spring water gushing out at over 90 degrees Celsius, forming a cauldron of hot water that includes an ogama and a round cauldron.
It is also used as a local kitchen, where residents boil wild vegetables and greens, and clean and maintain it on a regular basis.
The fact that hot springs are deeply rooted in daily life is unique in the world.
旅館の近くには、足湯や小さなショップの他、湯煙がもうもうと上がる野沢温泉名物の「麻釜（おがま）」があり、散歩するにもちょうどいい場所にあります。
麻釜は、90度以上の温泉が湧き出し、大釜や丸釜などの湯だまりを形成する野沢温泉の名所です。
地元の台所としても利用され、住民が山菜や野菜を茹で、掃除や管理も定期的に行っています。
温泉が生活に深く根ざしている点は、世界的にも珍しいと思います。
Sometimes the cats even come to the changing room when we are about to enter the hot spring after dinner at the ryokan. They probably like the temperature and humidity of the hot springs.
Of course, you should not enter the onsen with them, but please leave them alone when they are sleeping in the basket in the changing room.
旅館で夕食を終え温泉に入ろうとする時も、時には脱衣所まで猫はやってきます。きっと温泉の温度と湿気が好きなのでしょう。
もちろん一緒に温泉に入ることはないですが、脱衣所のカゴで寝ている時などはそっとしておいてあげてください。
When I woke up in the morning, to my surprise, I saw a sea of clouds covering the town of Nozawa Onsen outside my window.
I was very happy to see it by chance, because a sea of clouds does not occur unless the weather conditions are right.
However, I did not read in any guidebooks that cloud seas occur in this area.
Is a sea of clouds an everyday occurrence for the locals, or is it something that is not uncommon?
朝目覚めると、なんと窓の外には野沢温泉の街を覆い尽くすような雲海が広がっていました。
雲海は気象条件などが合わないと発生しないものなので、偶然にも見ることができて本当に良かったです。
しかしこの辺りで雲海が発生することは、ガイドブックなどにも載っていませんでした。
地元の人たちにしてみては、雲海は日常茶飯事で珍しくないものなのでしょうか？
In the morning, the cat called out to us at the door again.
When I opened the door, he came into the room again without hesitation, climbed into the futon we were sleeping on, and began to sleep slightly or lay down where the sun shone and basked in the sun.
It was very comforting to see her like that.
朝も扉の前で猫が声をかけてきました。
「おはよう」と言って開けると、また遠慮なく部屋に入ってきて、私たちが寝ていた布団に入り込んで微睡んだり、日が当たる場所で横になり日向ぼっこを始めました。
その様子はとても気持ちを癒してくれます。
After checking out of the ryokan and taking a bath in a nearby public hot spring called “Asagama Onsen Park Furusato no Yu”, we went to “Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort Nagasaka Gondola Lift” which is about 15 minutes away on foot.
While the snowy mountain season is attractive, the “Kaminodaira Picnic Garden” during the non-snowy season is also great!
My personal recommendation is the season of autumn leaves.
The colorful autumn leaves seen while riding the gondola lift are exceptional.
旅館をチェックアウトして、近くにある「麻釜温泉公園ふるさとの湯」という公共温泉に入った後、徒歩約15分くらいにある「野沢温泉スキー場 長坂ゴンドラリフト」へ。
雪山の季節も魅力的ですが、雪がないシーズンの「上ノ平ピクニックガーデン」も最高です！
個人的におすすめは紅葉シーズン。
ゴンドラリフトに乗りながら眺める色彩豊かな紅葉は格別です。
At the top, reached by a gondola lift, there is an outdoor sofa space where you can relax, surrounded by seasonal flowers and trees.
Of course, there is also a café where you can enjoy drinks and snacks, so you can have a pleasant time.
For those who like activities, there are MTB courses and trekking courses for you to try.
ゴンドラリフトで登った頂上には、季節の草花や樹々に囲まれ、リラックスできるアウトドアのソファースペースも。
もちろんドリンクや軽食が楽しめるカフェもあるので、気持ちの良い時間を過ごせます。
アクティビティが好きな方には、MTBコースやトレッキングコースもあるのでぜひチャレンジしてみては。
While we recommend Nozawa Onsen in the snowy mountains, we also encourage you to enjoy Nozawa Onsen during the snow-free season.
雪山の野沢温泉もおすすめですが、雪のない時期の野沢温泉にもぜひ楽しんでください。
